Anxiety / Stress
Anxiety and Stress are terms used interchangeably in everyday conversation.
However, they are different.
Anxiety: Nervousness, apprehension, worrying and feelings of unease, often related to
situations “perceived” as threatening and dangerous. It is “future orientated”.
Anxiety is often thought of as the “inability to handle the ambiguities or uncertainties of
Stress Response: Stress is the body’s reaction to the anxiety and is called the Stress
Response. It is experienced in the “present”. One may experience an increased heart rate,
breathing rapidly and increased sweating.
Chronic Anxiety / Stress can result in the following:
- Affecting decision making i.e. cognition is comprised
- Earlier onset of Dementia, Alzheimer’s
- Chronic diseases (various cancers)
- Chronic fatigue
- Depression, Insomnia, Suicide
- Depleted immune system (greater risk to attract diseases)
- Inability to maintain relationships
